Passengers that experience cancellations, or medium and major delays without a quick resolution, produce almost 100% of an airline’s negative media that leads to customer churn.

This small percentage of passengers is an airline’s ImPax Percentage.

An airline’s ImPax Percentage is calculated as:


On average, an airline’s ImPax Percentage accounts for less than 1 in 13 flights (< 8%).

The Lower an Airline’s ImPax %, the Better.

Latam Overall cancellations and delays decreased in May 2026, but long delays (>5 hours) rose among Tier 1 and Tier 2 carriers, highlighting the susceptibility of hub-based networks to weather-related disruption and cascading operational impacts. Europe While cancellations fell by more than 60% compared to April 2026, long-duration delays remained persistently high, resulting in almost 3 million passengers becoming eligible for compensation under EU261. APAC All disruption metrics improved compared to April 2026; however, this improvement was partly influenced by lower network activity, with flight volumes remaining approximately 10% below May 2025 levels.
North America Cancellations nearly doubled compared to April 2026, driven primarily by severe weather impacting major U.S. carriers such as American Airlines and Delta Air Lines. The increase was further amplified by Spirit Airlines ceasing operations, with its final flight operating on 2 May. ME&A Signs of recovery are emerging as cancellations have significantly decreased compared to April 2026. The bad news is every delay segment has risen, even with a 25% decrease in overall capacity for the region.

Global Disruptions Overview

This month’s report analyses the disruption data of 249 airlines totalling 529,952 disrupted flights, across 2,734,433 planned flights, globally.

May 2026 saw continued operational challenges across the global aviation sector as airlines prepared for the peak summer travel season. Disruption was driven by a combination of elevated fuel costs, labour actions in Europe, air traffic control constraints, adverse weather, and airport operational issues, contributing to increased delays and cancellations across several regions. While global flight volumes continued to recover, overall traffic remained approximately 10% below May 2025 levels. North America experienced relatively stable operations despite isolated weather and airport-related disruptions, while the APAC region benefited from continued demand growth and fewer large-scale operational events. As airlines increase capacity ahead of the busy summer period, maintaining operational resilience amid ongoing infrastructure, staffing, and geopolitical pressures will remain a key industry challenge.

"Very disappointing customer service experience with [AIRLINE]. I booked four tickets directly through [AIRLINE]. One passenger's first name was entered incorrectly, while the surname, passport number, date of birth and all other passport details were correct. I was advised that the only solution was to purchase a new ticket at a cost of over $3,000 shortly before departure. The original ticket was later refunded, but I still suffered a substantial financial loss. What made the situation even more frustrating was being told at the airport that the matter may have been resolved differently. Despite months of correspondence, [AIRLINE] declined to offer any compensation or goodwill gesture. The experience caused significant stress and financial hardship and has left me with no confidence in the airline's customer service. Unfortunately, I will not be using [AIRLINE] again and cannot recommend them based on my experience."

"I was pleasantly surprised by this [AIRLINE] flight. It's been years since I have travelled long-haul with [AIRLINE] and was apprehensive. I was connecting in [CITY] from a regional flight from [CITY], which was not so good. But boarding on this flight was early and smooth, meals were OK and there was a good selection of beverages on offer. Toilets and the cabin was clean and the staff were good and chatty. Leg room was not a problem for me, but the seats were incredibly comfortable."

"This is THE WORST AIRLINE in the world. I used to fly it 20 years ago and it was fine but now it's an embarrassment to its country. I finally spoke with an agent who told me he could bully me all he wanted and also that there is no standby list on this airline. The connection was cancelled and the fact it was a $5k biz ticket did not matter. His advice was to show up at the gate of the next available (fully booked) flight and then the agents decide who gets on, totally on their whimsy including how they might feel about race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status etc. that day. I didn't know airlines could do this but he said yes and when I got upset he warned me he might hang up on me and that he was doing me a favor by speaking with me at all. Normally they just ignore upset clients."

"[AIRLINE] has fallen so far down on the scale of good airlines. My outbound flight from [CITY] to [CITY] was delayed one hour due to a toilet. My return flight now from [CITY] to [CITY] has been delayed six hours due to another maintenance issue. Apparently the truck that was supposed to fix the issue also broke down, and it is the only truck in the entire airport. Now we have to wait for a flight from [CITY] to board and land in [CITY] and take us to [CITY]. Our simple 2 hr and 40 minute flight turned into an 11 hour ordeal. We went up to the [AIRLINE] line to get our meal voucher and it turns out the meal voucher is only $12 per person. I think I can buy a bottle of water with that."

I had 2 vegan meals, free headphones, watched a movie and used the pillow and blanket provided. The leg room was limited even for me at 5'2\". Staff were not particularly friendly but were not rude. "STORY TIME... It took us 20 hours (yes, twenty!) to take off because the plane kept failing technical revisions again and again (can't blame it on the weather this time as they usually do). This happened twice within that span of 20 hours, because they would get us back on the very same defect plane every time. Why would a plane like that even be allowed to fly in the first place? Because the first attempt failed, [AIRLINE] took us to a hotel dozens of kilometers away from the airport, a voucher for which we had to line up for 2 hours to receive, followed by a one-hour ride. We got there at midnight and got an OK meal. In the morning, breakfast was served (a juice box and a tiny bread) and we were taken back to the airport. Once there, this is when the second failed takeoff attempt took place, so they got us back off and had us once again line up for 2 hours for a lunch voucher. This caused such chaos in the airport, that the line to redeem the voucher was also 2 hours. We barely got our lunch right before the plane doors were closed behind us. This time, they announced they would perform yet a third technical revision! People were really losing it and understandably so. At the end, after an hour of revision, they concluded it was actually safe to fly and the nightmare finally ended. Oh, and at the airport they assured us that they would provide a miserable 15 USD compensation. Funny people ended up receiving only 10 USD weeks later. I've never had a worse experience flying than with [AIRLINE]."
