Passengers that experience cancellations, or medium and major delays without a quick resolution, produce almost 100% of an airline’s negative media that leads to customer churn.

This small percentage of passengers is an airline’s ImPax Percentage.

An airline’s ImPax Percentage is calculated as:


On average, an airline’s ImPax Percentage accounts for less than 1 in 13 flights (< 8%).

The Lower an Airline’s ImPax %, the Better.

The aim of this report is to help airlines focus their recovery operations by better understanding their ImPax Percentage in the context of:

  • Passenger estimates
  • Competitor airlines
  • Region, Tier, and Class
  • Sentiment analysis of monthly reviews

Quick Insights

Global 12% decrease in disruptions saw >5 million LESS disrupted passengers compared to September. Europe 0.9m passengers qualified for compensation due to EU261, this month. North America More than 1.5m passengers among T1 and T2 carriers experienced a cancellation and major (+3 hr) delay qualifying for automatic reimbursement under new Department of Transport rules.
LATAM 12% of flight volumes of Latam carriers experienced sub-one hour delays impacting approximately 3 million passengers. APAC Approx. 1% of flight volumes for T1 carriers were impacted by major delays (+ 3 hrs) and cancellations, accounting for 750K disrupted passengers. TOP 10 Airlines Disruptions decreased by 16% even though there was a 5% increase in flight volumes.

This month’s report analyses the disruption data of 291 airlines totalling 551,376 disrupted flights, across 2,958,296 planned flights, globally.

October – which included some notable storms – saw an increase in overall flight volumes by 3% but a decrease in disruptions by approx. 12% decrease in disrupted flights, with a >20% decrease in disrupted passengers compared to last month.

“Flights to [country] were changed drastically to the total opposite end of the day in both directions of travel. Our flight times were child friendly then all of a sudden were changed to ultra early in the morning then midnight at the other end. It also ruined our domestic connecting flights. We got the flights for an amazing bargain, $1850 for 5 people return. It feels like they changed our flight times to sell the better timed flights for more. Unreliable! Will never book again. They offered a full refund but that does not take away from the inconvenience.”

It is so pathetic that we gave them so much taxpayer money during COVID and they still treat us like dirt. The DOT needs to come up with some significant punishments for the way they treat customers. They changed our flight from Wednesday night to Thursday day. My daughter and I were surprised when they gave us the new boarding passes plus 700 pesos for dinner, plus taxi money to the hotel, plus a very nice hotel, plus 600 pesos for breakfast, plus taxi money to the airport. I don't know of any airline in the USA that does this. And they did this for two full plans that were cancelled that night. The plane was clean, every single seat had entertainment, they gave us headphones, snacks, I don't drink alcohol but they have different alcoholic beverages. I will always fly with [airline].”
